How do you stop a whining dog/puppy?

I ɡοt a puppy today аnԁ ѕhе hаѕ a habit οf whining… especially іf wе leave thе house. I live іn a hotel-style apartment wіth tile floors аnԁ long narrow hallways ѕο thе sound echos. I wіƖƖ stand outside thе door tο see hοw see reacts whеn wе leave аnԁ ѕhе wіƖƖ continue tο сrу аnԁ bark.

Hοw ԁο уου fix thіѕ? hοw саn уου train hеr tο bе qυіеt?

Puppies cry because they want/need something. Remember that it is not always what they need just because they want it.

Hopefully your neighbors will understand while you go through the training process.

Depending on how old the pup is there are a few tricks to try.

I’m assuming you’re using a crate. If not, you should. Make sure that the crate door is always open when you are home so she gets used to it being her den.

Darkness usually has a calming effect on dogs so try to cover the crate with a dark blanket. Be sure to secure the blanket so she can’t pull it through the bars. Leave at least half of the front open so she can still see out but feels secure in there. Put some comfy things in there to curl up with and a safe toy that she can have and you don’t have to supervise her with. You also may try putting in an old dirty shirt that you have worn, or anything with your smell, in with her so she has your smell to comfort her.

Most importantly… do not run over to your dog every time she starts whining just to make her stop, whether she is in a crate or not. Dogs learn quickly what actions they do get reactions from their owners. If you run to her every time she cries you will teach her to whine all the time. Instead, wait until she is quit and then pay attention to her with lots of praise and a treat now and then.

And make sure that she has been fed, has water and doesn’t have to potty so you know that her whining is just for companionship and not something that she truly needs.
